Seeing as I already own a Trimble SV6 GPS module, and a 24x2 LCD unit, it seems kind of logical to port them across to the gyro. Only thing missing is some kind of CPU to drive them. The existing beast is a very old, very heavy laptop. I *was* thinking of using a Viper board from Arcom... but in addition to the US$500 for the board itself, they want ~US$500 for the operating system.
Current flavour of the month is a KB9201 from Kwikbyte for US$200 and for which the OS and tools
are completely free.
In addition to running Linux, it takes SD cards, and has USB and serial interfaces.
You can't do anything particularly sophisticated with a character display, but that's more than enough to call up waypoints, headings-to-fly and display (amongst other things) ground speed and track-made-good. Not to mention disc and track names!
